Research Group of Applied Environmental Microbiology

Within our group, we investigate the occurrence of microorganisms and their application in the environment. This primarily involves contaminated geological environments, where we design bioremediation methods using cultivation and analytical techniques. Our second area of research is the application of an engineering approach to the recycling of used materials. In all our work, we address the occurrence of microorganisms, focusing on their isolation, characterization, and identification.

Within these topics, we will be expanding our methods to include the development of cultivation media and the identification of microorganisms using microscopic techniques.

RESEARCH AREAS

Plasterboard Recycling

  • Monitoring the occurrence of microorganisms on plasterboard
  • Isolation and characterization of microorganisms from the plasterboard environment
  • Determination of the enzyme activity of microorganisms
  • Potential applications for plasterboard waste

Bioremediation of Petroleum Products

  • Determination of microorganisms in soils
  • Monitoring the degradation of contaminants
  • Designing bioremediation methods

Determination of Metals in Waste Samples

  • Cultivation of extremophiles
  • Analytical methods for the determination of metals
  • Designing technology for the removal of metals from samples

News

Within our thematic areas, we offer students in their final years of study a wide spectrum of topics for bachelor's and master's theses, as well as the opportunity to participate in solving the aforementioned issues as part of student scientific activities.

Students will learn:

  • Microbiological sampling and analysis of contaminated geological environments and waste using cultivation tests and microscopy techniques.
  • Isolation, identification, and characterization of microorganisms and their application in technologies (e.g., biodegradation of petroleum substances, composting of contaminated material).
