The Department of Environmental Chemistry is a modern and progressive department within the Faculty of Environmental Technology at the University of Chemistry and Technology, Prague (UCT Prague). We are a well-equipped department dedicated to addressing issues related to environmental protection, with a strong focus on preparing specialists in decontamination technologies and waste management.
Our History
The Department was established in 1990, evolving from a former research laboratory. From the very beginning, our pedagogical and research activities have been focused on the critical issues of waste management and contaminated soils. At the time of our founding, these were largely neglected fields in the country. Lacking established traditions to build upon, we forged our own path by actively establishing strong connections with industrial organizations and collaborating with international universities and institutions where environmental studies were already well-developed.
Study and Research Focus
Our study programmes provide a strong foundation in core chemical disciplines such as organic, inorganic, physical, and analytical chemistry, as well as chemical engineering. This knowledge is then applied to specialized subjects focused on environmental solutions.
Our main areas of expertise include:
- Decontamination Technologies: Such as AOPs, membrane separation (e.g., reverse osmosis, membrane contactorsd), soil vapour extraction (SVE), thermal desorption, stripping, coagulation, stabilization, bioremediation and in-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO).
- Waste Processing and Management: Stabilization/solidification, thermal desorption, and ash utilization.
- CBRN Protection: Development of systems for detecting various types of hazardous substances, mathematical models, field and laboratory analysis of NPS, and the study of the dispersion of hazardous substances in the environment
Our teaching philosophy emphasizes hands-on experience. Theoretical lectures are complemented by practical work in our advanced laboratories, as well as excursions and short-term internships. The study programme culminates in a diploma thesis and a final state examination. Graduates are awarded the title Engineer (Ing.), which is equivalent to a Master of Science (MSc.) degree, and have the opportunity to continue their studies in our PhD programme.
